Summary- Since witnessing her parents' murders at the age of eleven, Phoenix's only purpose in life has been to uphold her mothers dying words- to be strong and survive. But surviving outside of the Walls- outside of The Sanctuary- is more like a drawn-out death sentence. A cruel and ruthless city, Tartarus is run by the Tribes whose motto is simple, "Join or die."

Refusing to join and determined to live, Phoenix fights to survive in this savage world. But who can she trust, when no one can be trusted? Not even herself.

Review-

Oftomes publishing sent me the copy of this book, and I was so excited to read it because I was seeing so much about it, and the cover is green! GREEN!
So, when I first started it I was kind of expecting something like . . . the hunger games or Divergent where everyone is forced into different groups like ("District 12, or a faction") but this wasn't really like that!
It did! have it's groups, the ravenger's and the others, but people weren't FORCED into being in these groups they more or less were born into them or chose to be in them. See what I'm saying?

This novel is fast paced so it was very quickly you understood what was happening, whose who, what's what, what to do and what not to do. I love fast paced books because they ALWAYS just get right down to business, not games being played where you wait the ENTIRE book for answers . . . even though there are tons of unanswered questions I have and am tempted on begging Jennifer Wilson or ofTomes to tell me what happens because honestly, I am so excited for the next one! I just want to go to Oftomes and take the draft or copy, and just slip out unnoticed.
I'll return it. I promise. I just want to know!

And have I mentioned Triven?
I'll get to him, don't worry. I think I have more to say about the male characters in books than I do female characters. So don't worry. Triven will be mentioned A Lot.

*evil cackle*

Characters: Let's start with the main character, and I'll let the suspense wait with Triven as I tell you all about Phoenix and you just sit there wondering what I have to say about Triven . . . Triven Triven Triven, what will I say . . . ? hehe
Phoenix is a very independent girl in the beginning but as time goes on and she meets Mouse and Triven . . . I feel she becomes less independent and more DEPENDENT when she meets Triven (so many TRIVEN's!) ]. And it is okay for what she has been through, like Phoenix mentioned she has pushed all her emotions away after seeing her parents' murdered that she never had time to mourn or anything. (She did, she had plenty of time) but she didn't.
I hope that in the next book she still needs Triven but a little more as a supporter and less as a care-taker. He was her distraction in a way, and I felt like that was kind of mean to Triven. She was just using him to make all her feelings go away, and I didn't like that.
Now, to Triven!
Triven was obviously my favorite. I take that back, Mouse was my absolute favorite!
I loved mouse! But Triven was my favorite Male Character.
I loved Triven because he was nice from the beginning! and if you hadn't noticed all (most) boys are perfect in books. Triven was perfect.

He HAD known a little what Phoenix went through he NEVER pitied her! he never did anything for HER because he pitied her, he did it because he LOVED her.
I don't get how he knew he LOVED her as soon as he saw her . . . but I'll go with it because I like Triven and I trust Triven. I hope nothing bad happens to him, and Jennifer if you hurt him . . . I will be very, very, very sad. I don't know what I would do . . . because I am emotional unstable. and I will cry if he just get's a paper cut! No I wouldn't but if he got seriously injured I'd cry. I get very attached to characters . . . even characters I don't like.
But enough of that! let's move on to the adorable little girl, MOUSE!
Mouse is a very brave little girl, and very smart. I do see a lot of Mouse in Phoenix and maybe that's why Phoenix likes her so much? Maybe she saw a resemblance when she first saw her? I don't know exactly but I love how they were inseparable from the beginning. When Phoenix left, Mouse left. And nobody argued. They were pretty much joined at the hip for a while, and I was okay with it. But then Mouse met Marabel (did I spell her name right?) I hope so. But Marabel seems like a great little friend for mouse! I like her.

I wish I could just take all the characters and group hug them and tell them I love them . . . but that would be a little weird, right?
no?
whose joining?

Setting: Okay, so pretty much the whole city where they are 'trapped' in is destroyed from time and people destroying stuff. I like this idea, because I love broken cities!
I LOVE THEM! I love the buildings in half and parts of the building is missing.
I don't know why but that image above just AHHH! I love it. It isn't from the book, just an image from the internet but you get my point! I just love love love broken cities and this one that I have fallen in love with--because of Triven and Phoenix-- is called; Tartarus. I don't love the people in Tartarus--only three people--but I do like the city, I love old broken things. Vintage-y and I love the library that is mentioned!
I love books, obviously, and when she went to the library I kind of made my own image of it.
There is an image I saw while reading this and I started searching old libraries and found this, and I fell in love with this image and just thinking of Phoenix being in something like this:
Out of all things, I want to be in a really really really old library! with the wood decaying and the pages in the books old and the smell of old books! AHH!
This image was my setting for the library scene! Of course how it is set up in the book is wayy different but there could be this room!
That would be amazing.

so overall, I enjoyed this novel so much! and I can't wait for the second! Thank you OfTomes for sending me a digital copy and thank you Jennifer Wilson for writing such a wonderful book! I am in love with it!
I would recommend this to all booknerds who love Dystopian!

As a child Jennifer loved getting lost in the stories of others, but struggled greatly with reading. A notoriously slow reader who stumbled with words and spelling, Jennifer shied away from books, leaning heavily on musical theater and movies to get her inspirational fix.

It was not until in her mid-teens, when a persistent friend convinced her to read the Harry Potter series, that Jennifer found her love for the written word. J.K. Rowling’s books opened doors not only to the fascinating world of a young wizard, but to a life filled with a multitude of literary friends and fantastical worlds. Once a timid reader, Jennifer now devours books and loves getting lost in a new series.
